Club Background

Sewerby Cricket Club.

 Founded 1890

Present location from 1952

Sewerby Cricket ground is situated on Sewerby cliff top in front of the Georgian grandeur of Sewerby Hall and boasts a panoramic view extending from the spectacular white chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head to the north and across the sweep of Bridlington Bay towards Spurn Head to the south.

The well-appointed pavilion provides a suntrap for members and there are excellent changing facilities for players. The tea room is renowned for its standard of refreshment.

The playing surface is arguably the best in the area, regularly providing a feast of runs for the delight of spectators who are able to take advantage of the seating, which extends all round the boundary.

In 1999 the Club was awarded a Trophy for the most improved ground and facilities in the “3D” Scarborough Beckett League.

Coaching is available on Tuesday evenings for youngsters from the age of eight years and upwards, who eventually graduate to play in the Under 15 XI in the Derwent Valley Junior League.  Junior League matches are often played on Sunday mornings.  Parental help and family involvement are welcomed.

The Club enters one team into the Bridlington and District Evening League.  This Academy XI caters essentially for those players who have just left the Juniors and may not quite have reached the standard needed to play in the Senior Teams.

From 2002, the first XI have played in the York and District Senior Cricket League.  The Club Second Team play in the “Readers” Scarborough Beckett League. The standard of cricket is high and in 2001 the first XI finished as Champions of the top division. Matches are played on Saturday afternoons.

There is nearly always a game on Sunday afternoons at Sewerby, friendlies being fitted in between North Humberside Sunday League fixtures and rounds of the National Village Knockout Competition.

Since 1993, the Club has played annual fixtures against Yorkshire C.C.C. for the “benefit” of various county players. Consequently many famous names have appeared at Sewerby in recent years. Martin Moxon, Phil Carrick, Ashley Metcalf and David Byass are among those who have benefited and Darren Gough, Michael Vaughan, Craig White, Matthew Hoggard and Chris Silverwood have all demonstrated their skills at the cliff top ground in front of large and enthusiastic crowds. On one famous occasion the Club actually beat the Yorkshire XI!

In addition there are many social and fund raising activities throughout the year. Notably on the last Sunday in July, the Club holds its annual major fund raising event in the form of Sewerby Gala. This has become one of the best-attended attractions of the East Coast and many thousands of holidaymakers return on an annual basis to sample the delights.
