Club Mark

Sewerby Cricket Club has now successfully achieved the National ECB Qualification "Club Mark".

David Byas makes Club Mark Presentation at Sewerby C. C.

As an acknowledgement of the efforts made at Sewerby, former Yorkshire County Cricket Club Captain and present Director of Cricket, David Byas visited the cliff top ground to present the Club with its prestigious “Club Mark “ Certificate.
David was accompanied by Paul Shaw, YCB Cricket Development Officer for East Yorkshire and Reece Bird from the Humber Sports Partnership. The presentation coincided with Junior Practice night at Sewerby and the visitors were able to witness an impressive turn out of juniors and to see the various activities taking place.
One photograph shows the presentation being made to John Blythe (Club Development Officer) with Ken Rennoldson (Junior Manager) and Vince O’Grady (Club Secretary) looking on. The other photo shows the visitors with the juniors and their coaches.
After the presentation, their was an impromptu meeting in the Ship Inn where Mr Byas chatted entertainingly about cricket and Yorkshire in particular.

Only 21 Clubs in the whole of Yorkshire have qualified for Club Mark so far and in our area. Sewerby now joins Hornsea, Beverley, Goole and Stamford Bridge. Having already attained both ERCAS Levels 1 & 2, the Club has now pushed on to achieve the ECB nationally-recognised Club Mark status.

As an overall objective, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has developed a strategic plan to encourage young people to play cricket. This National Authority has asked the 38 County Cricket Boards to identify Focus Clubs, of which Sewerby is one. Focus Clubs are expected to:
1. Achieve Club Mark Accreditation – which recognises safe effective and child-friendly Junior sections;
2. Work within a development Group – to ensure integrated community links;
3. Produce a long term Development Plan;
4. Link with local Schools and Community networks;
5. Commit to monitoring and evaluation.

Much effort and commitment have been needed to achieve the Club Mark award and Sewerby now possesses all the criteria necessary to fulfil Focus Club status.

The Club already boasted two Level 2 Coaches and three at Level 1 but recently, five more club members qualified as Cricket Coaches under the new Coaching Award Scheme.

On Wed 22nd June (from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.) the Club will host a junior schools Kwik Cricket competition, the winners of which may progress eventually through area competitions to national finals.
During August, there will be a two day “Enjoy Cricket” experience on the Club Ground, when our qualified coaches will give youngsters of all abilities the opportunity to try out their cricketing skills.

The Club is always on the lookout for new members at all levels. Junior and senior players together with non-players who may wish to support the club in its many activities are welcome. For details contact John Blythe Tel: 01262 678241 or any club member. The Club’s website is well worth a visit: www.sewerbycc.co.uk

The club has already been awarded level 2 of the East Riding Club Accreditation Scheme. We are the first cricket club in the East Riding to achieve this distinction. It means that we are a well-organised club with a child friendly approach and that the ERYC is pleased to recommend Sewerby CC as having good, safe coaching facilities especially for junior cricketers.

Child Welfare Issues
Following directives from the various Cricket Leagues of which we are members, Sewerby C C intends to adopt the recently published English Cricket Board’s Child Welfare Policy ( ECB CWP) called “Safe Hands”.

Already, at the AGM of the Club, Michael J Griffiths has been appointed as Child Welfare Officer and he will be attending training sessions before the season starts.

As the season progresses, other aspects of the policy will gradually be introduced. All coaches possess Yorkshire Cricket Board Coaching Certificates and either have already achieved Criminal Records Bureau Clearance Certificates or are in the process of applying for them. Other Club Members involved with Juniors will be asked to complete a Self Declaration Form.

Club Changing Policy
The circumstances under which the following are likely to apply occur when players under the age of 18 years are picked to play for senior teams; e.g. first XI, second XI, Academy XI or Sunday XI.

1. Adults should try to change and shower at separate times to young players.
2. If adults and young players need to share a changing facility, the Club will require consent from the parent that their child/children can share a changing room with adults in the Club.
3. If young players are uncomfortable changing or showering with adults, no pressure will be placed upon them to do so. They would be encouraged to do this at home.

We are in the process of producing a new form of application for Junior Membership but this may not be available for use this season. Please continue to use the form sent out with the previous Newsletter or down load it from the web site.

Clothing
All players, senior and Junior, must wear appropriate kit. Cricket whites, (preferably with the Sewerby colours, i.e.blue and gold trim) and suitable trainers or cricket shoes should be worn for matches but tracksuits and the like are permitted for practising.

All players under the age of 18 years must wear helmets when batting and when standing up to the stumps when wicket keeping.

In the interests of hygiene, all players are expected to provide their own abdominal protector (cricketer’s box).

Blue Club Cricket caps (adjustable size, modern style) are available from Rob Coates.

Please be assured that Sewerby C. C. is endeavouring to implement the guide lines issued by the Yorkshire Cricket Board in respect of Child Welfare.
