Club Captain’s report 2009 – Chris Briggs

We looked forward to the 2009 season with confidence. We had new signings Russ Robinson, Ricky Robinson and Ben Dobson to add to with the rest of the team from last season and with the ground looking in tip top condition, we thought this was going to be Sewerby’s year. But disaster struck with the sad news that Russ had broken his leg and would miss the whole of the season and also a mix up at the ground saw the pitches and outfield in a disappointing condition.

We started the season with a defeat at the home of the eventual champions Londesborough Park but we bounced back with a win at New Earswick and winning draws against Dringhouses and Whitkirk. This saw Sewerby up to third in the League.

After that, for some unknown reason, Sewerby started on a disastrous run, losing the next four with the fifth rained off. This saw Sewerby plummet to second from bottom in the League and in the relegation zone. After a few choice words in the dressing room, Sewerby travelled to Carlton Towers with a very young team, including five teenagers and came away with their best performance of the year;  Lewis Beasley leading the way with six wickets on his first bowl of the season. Chasing 207, we comfortably reached the target with Ben Dobson leading the way with a brilliant 87. This result changed Sewerby’s fortunes. With confidence brimming and the signing of Nick Johnson, of the next eight games, Sewerby had six winning draws against top teams. Then one was rained off and the only blip was against New Earswick at home, when Sewerby lost the toss and were inserted on a wet pitch. This resulted in them being bowled out for a low score but with the sun shining, the conditions improved drastically and New Earswick were able to pass Sewerby’s total. Sewerby’s season ended with the loss of two of the last three games but nevertheless we finished in a creditable fifth position.

On the batting side, new signing Ben Dobson finished top run scorer with 544 runs (at an average of 30.2) including four fifties. This was a promising beginning to his Sewerby career and we are looking to him to build on this in the future. The ever reliable Mike Artley was next with 458 runs (at an average of 32.7) including five fifties. A total of 303 runs placed me in third position in spite of carrying one or two niggling injuries. Shaun Acton scored 301 and is beginning to mature as a batsman, constantly scoring vital runs in the middle order. Other contributions came from Lewis Beasley 199; Rob Coates 182; Mark Purvis 176; Ricky Robinson 156 and Nicky Johnson 132 from only eight innings.

Lewis Beasley led the bowling with 26 wickets in his debut season as a first team bowler. His well-flighted off spin made a big impact on Sewerby’s results in the second half of the season. He was well complemented by Nicky Johnson (22 wickets) who bowled a flatter and quicker variety of off spin at the other end. They bowled well in tandem and turned a lot of games our way. Rew Rennoldson and Ben Dobson each captured a creditable 20 wickets followed by Rob Coates with 13.

Luke Jennison once again showed he was the outstanding keeper of the whole division with 15 victims, in spite of missing six games due to family and work commitments. He was greatly missed when unavailable. His enthusiasm and vocal encouragement from behind the stumps had a positive effect on the whole team. Our congratulations and best wishes go to both Luke and Sarah on the birth of their baby son.

In the fielding department this year, there was a great improvement with the appearance of the new signings and Vinnie Clarke’s emergence from the Second XI. We were a lot more mobile and our ground fielding was sharper.

Looking to the future, there is a great deal to be optimistic about. The arrival of all the new signings means the present side is a good mix of youth and experience and there are promising youngsters in the second team, who will be pushing for first team places. I was pleased to see that Russ Robinson was able to turn out for the last game of the season at Tadcaster, where he turned in a creditable performance in spite of still suffering from his injury. He will be a force to be reckoned with and will certainly strengthen the team.
All this bodes well for the future and I will be disappointed if we do not gain promotion in 2010.

Hopefully the continued efforts of the groundstaff will mean that we shall regain the high standard of square and outfield to match the other superb facilities, which are the envy of many clubs in the area and which are sure to attract further quality players.

In conclusion, I would like to congratulate the Second XI and Third XI on their respective promotions and to thank all those Club Officials and members who have helped and supported me during my time as captain this year.
In particular:

  • Mike Artley who as vice-captain has made my job easier and also lent considerable support with the enormous burden of paper-work that follows each League game.
  • Rob Coates and Rew Rennoldson for regularly producing match reports.
  • The members of the Selection Committee for their weekly attendance.
  • Aldred Bostwick for scoring at all our matches.
  • Pete Jefferson and John Brumpton who have worked tirelessly on the square and outfield in a very difficult situation.
  • Christine, Peter and Pat who have provided and served some excellent teas and refreshments.
  • Our loyal supporters, home and away, especially the members of “top bench” for their frequent words of encouragement and wisdom.

2nd XI Report 2009 - Steve Foster

I will start with my appreciation of the people who have helped make the season such a successful one.
Firstly thanks to Val and Paul for scoring throughout the season, and to Mick “Stubbs” Stubbs for umpiring.
To John and Pete who have always tried to provide us with the best wickets possible under difficult circumstances.
To Chris Briggs for assisting with selection when I have not been able to make it on Monday nights, and to Mike Griffiths who throughout the season has been ever helpful and understanding when I have required the services of players from the third team.
Also a big thanks to Vince Clarke for successfully captaining the side in the last three games of the season in my absence.
On the playing side the season started well with a win against Wold Newton, it was followed up with a defeat at Locton, you would have to ask Dave Staveley what my face was like after that or any other defeat during the season.
At the start of the first game I asked everyone to play cricket with the hard enthusiasm that I have always tried to play with myself, and to give me 100% effort. No one let me down, and an excellent team spirit was formed.
Whether it be Ross Harrisons excellent 75 against Lockton or Ben Traves brilliant catch at Thornton Dale, if you can sit down after a game and know that you have contributed towards a victory then the game can be a very satisfying one indeed.
It was after the win at Sewerby in early June when we outplayed a very good Brompton side, (where man for man they were probably a better side than us, and certainly more experienced) that I thought promotion was a distinct possibility. I myself scored 72 that day, and as I said at the tea interval it will only be a good 72 if we win.
The bowlers outdid the batsmen throughout the season to put it bluntly, there is loads of batting potential in the side, but a lack of application to the conditions, concentration, and probably practice meant that only average totals had to be defended in order to seal victories.
Steven Hood’s 71 at Lockton, Mark Purvis’s 74 at Fylingdales, Rob Coates “plundered” 43 against Fylingdales, and  2 good “team totals” at Ryedale and Thornton Dale been the only other real batting highlights of the season.
The bowling on the other hand was a different matter, and although a large amount of the over’s were bowled by the ever reliable John Blythe (45 wickets) and the never say die Dave Staveley (26 wickets), it was the younger end who impressed most, with Rob, Cameron, Jack, Ben and Warren taking 71 wickets between them, all at very respectable economy rates. More importantly, it was rare as a captain I ever had to take any of the above off for poor bowling, but only because the bowling restrictions on these young lads forced me to do so. Also my role as captain was made easier by rarely having to resort to a split field, as in general they all bowled to the field I had set. There is lots of room for improvement in these bowlers, but for such a young age they can all be quite proud of their achievements this season.
The fielding too very rarely let us down, Steven Hood was excellent behind the stumps in his first season in the second team, and in general most catches were taken, (not sure mine against Brompton would be classed as a dropped catch as the ball never actually hit my hands!!) My plea for vocal support for our own players, and no barracking of the opposition was heeded, and all the players can be pleased with the way they have conducted themselves on and off the field of play this season.
And so after a comfortable victory over Grindale on the last match of the season, it came down to sweating it out at the Ship Inn, waiting to see if either Locton or Brompton would slip up in the  race for promotion to the 1st division. The former duly obliged, and Sewerby 2nds were promoted to the second flight of the Becket league for the first time in their history.
Next season no doubt will be a tough one, but we have a great set of young lads at the club who can only improve, and with the third teams success competition for places should be keen. It’s a case of staying together and realising the potential that is quite clearly there. Practice will be vitally important next season, and it’s quite clear to see this season that the players who have practiced most are the ones who have seen the greater improvement in their own performances.
So it just remains for me to say thank you once again to everyone who has helped on and off the field to make this season such a rewarding and enjoyable one.

Steve Foster.

3rd XI Captain’s report 2009 – Mike Griffiths

(To be read with the Queen Classic “We are the Champions” playing in the background)

“At last I can relax!” Sewerby 3rds are promoted as Champions of the Derwent Valley “C” Division. Congratulations to Ernie and all the team from a man slightly greyer now than when the season began.. For those of you did not get to see us, it is suggested as the end of the season drew closer I paced (or was it prowled), around the boundary more and more and never mind the championship trophy, the lasting memorial to our championship winning year is the groove around the edge of the backfield.

Now the job is done and it is time to reflect.

Firstly, with thanks to those who didn’t get a trophy, but without whom our seasons success would not have been possible. The ground staff and the pavilion committee who made the games possible, especially after such a difficult start to the season. To Christine and Peter for teas and to the families who made sure that our players not only get to the game but paid their subs as well. If I had a pound for every time I was told “my dad’s got it” I would be a very rich man.

Also thanks to Val for scoring so beautifully, (her score book is a work of art) and to Howard for umpiring, often in the face of some difficult circumstances. Harold “Dickie” Bird would have been proud of you.

On to the cricket and what can I say, it was a very successful year. From the first match of the season where we surprised Oriel in the cup to the last where Wykeham 3rds were simply blown away. Unbeaten in the League until early August , yet maintaining the spirit of cricket and giving the younger members of the club the opportunity to shine, which they did.

On the subject of the spirit of cricket I will make two comments. Firstly what a shame it is that we will not be visiting Cayton to play their third team next year, and second which fool supported Great Habton in playing a guest who won the game for them almost by himself. Yes that will be me then!

Our team was captained again this year by Ernie. Like a great wine he matures and improves with each passing year. This season he pitched in at important times with guidance, runs and wickets and is also the perfect foil for some boisterous young men. The bowling honours go to Ben Traves and Warren Sharples who showed their quality by being regularly picked for the second team as the season progressed. They in turn were more than ably supported by Harry Hudson, Alex Staveley, Shafiq Ullah and Sam Coultas. This was a very potent and efficient young bowling attack which many teams just could not cope with.

The batting this year proved equally strong with a number of half centuries from Warren Sharples (x2), James Faulkner, Matt Rusbridge-Burns (x2) and an exceptional 96 from Paul Dandy who was the leading run scorer. There were also some very useful knocks from Ben Traves, Sam Wragg, Harry Hudson, Dominic Warters and Luke Sharples who emerged as a very promising opening bat throughout the course of the season.

Sam Wragg had a very successful season behind the stumps and when he was unavailable Paul Dandy proved an able deputy. Our fielding was much improved on last season with catches being taken this year that would have been missed previously. Shafiq, Harry and Jo Nind all took important catches at vital times to help us win games.

Final thoughts, well we have had some interesting car moments this year, involving a cylinder head gasket and an exhaust system. Some colossal hits and throws courtesy of Sam Coultas, excellent bowling, some catches taken and some not. The tension following an “owzat” as son looks for mercy in his father’s eyes, but perhaps as always with the third team it is the emergence of “new stars” that sticks in the mind. Paul “Collar up” Staveley looking every bit the part, Martin “I haven’t played for a while” Faulkner who then hit the ball into an adjoining field for six, and Steve Wragg who proved every bit as enthusiastic as his son.

Lastly the players; to those who will more than likely move up in standard next year, and those who have established themselves having left the Junior ranks. All have played their part and contributed to what has been a simply magnificent season

As for myself, need you ask, after all we are the champions.

Academy Report 2009 - Andrew Rennoldson

After the Bridlington Evening league had enforced the change of which league Sewerby’s Evening League side would play in, the Academy side faced a tough season in the top division of the Evening League against the best sides around the Bridlington and Driffield area.

The lads set out at the beginning of the season with all intentions of competing to the best of the their ability, and a good start to the season was earned at Nafferton in a very low scoring game where Ross Harrison marked the start of the campaign with a thrilling hat-trick, helping to see Sewerby home. The side continued to produce other memorable moments through the season; Ian Pearson using his safe hands showing the juniors how to catch in the deep, Purvis making his way to an unbeaten 75, Mike Artley making sure the scorers were paying attention, Jack Newby and Rob Atkin’s bowling display against Bewholme and the most memorable of all, Shaun Acton delivering four 6’s on the bounce, leaving his captain with no balls to practice with, but at least the llamas were happy.

Throughout the season I have had much help from my senior players. Shaun Acton, Vince Clarke, Ian, Pearson, Mark Purvis and Rob Coates have all appeared for me on a regular basis which has made my job so much easier when selecting and allowed me to provide the balance to create an Academy side. A big thank you to you all and I hope for the same commitment next season.

With a selection of some of the players already mentioned, the rest of the side was to be filled with 15 – 19 year olds. This is what gave us our “Academy” status. U15 stars Rob Atkin and Sam Wragg both had good seasons with Rob ending as leading wicket taker and Sam gaining some good experience behind the stumps. Ricky Robinson, Lewis Beasley, Matt Dandy, Ross Harrison, Jack Newby and Sam Coultas all contributed to the side well and showed good character whether they were heavily involved in the game or not.

Once again I must send a massive thank you to John Blythe who has been most reliable for me and scored almost every game for me this season and also Mick Stubbs who has come along and umpired, two jobs which are very important and take a huge weight off my shoulders. Also a big thank you to Steve Wragg, Paul Dandy and John Wilson who have provided transport and come along and watched the side week in week out – a tremendous help!

The season has being a good learning curve for the Academy side and hopefully with talk of a possible 2nd night team next year it would be great to see even more players jump on the bandwagon and get playing on a night. With three teams on a Saturday and talk of a 4th and a possible two teams on a night the future looks bright. Hope to see you all next season,

Thanks,

Rew Rennoldson (Academy Captain)

Sewerby Juniors U15 A team report 2009 - Ken Rennoldson

With only Captain for this season Rob Atkin remaining from last years team the benefit of running a B team each year would  hopefully show through and potentially the team would be able to hold it’s own in the league.
The season started on a bit of a “downer” when the first match against Forge Valley had to be postponed due to the well documented state of Sewerby’s pitch, never to be played due to rain later in the season. Snainton withdrew from the league at the last minute thus reducing our fixtures by two more matches.
We eventually got underway at Pickering and were soon to realise that the season would be pretty competitive with an eight wicket defeat.
Another long trip to Ebberston came next and this put us on the right track with a 7 wkt win. We were drawn at home to a super confident Scarborough side mainly drawn from surrounding villages and still due to ground problems played on the back pitch which turned out to be a good decision when they fell short of our 81 score by 5 runs and this was due to some excellent bowling and fielding.
We then played our usual competitive high scoring match against Duncombe Park with over 220 runs scored on the day and unfortunately the opposition scored 119 of those runs to beat us. Always a good game though with Luke Sharples and Dom Warters both recording maximums.
Our next match was even more exciting against newcomers to the league Driffield, who posted a score of 94/7. All looked lost at 84/9 despite good efforts from Tom Christlow and Tom Hodgson to make up the shortfall. Usual B teamers Charlie Spalding and Jordan Corrigan were last at the crease. They steadfastly batted out the overs and tied the match on the last ball.
The next match against Forge Valley was also controversial and after restricting the home team to 74/5 and responding with 61/3 and 6 overs left our innings disintegrated and we finished on 71/9. The main problems occurred when Harry Hudson was give out bowled after the ball had clearly hit Valley’s wicket keeper in the chest and dropped on to the bails leaving a bemused Harry scratching his West Indian helmet and walking to the pavilion. A fine example to all to accept the umpires (not me) decision even when it’s wrong.  Hopefully you win some as well!!
A couple of defeats against eventual league winners and runners up, Scarborough and Pickering followed mainly due to our main batters not fulfilling their potential in the same match otherwise we would have been challenging these teams.
We entered July to play a much arranged, postponed, rearranged Cup Semi/league match against Ebberston and we recorded a comfortable win to go through to meet Driffield at North Marine road.
A high scoring game at Driffield saw Tom Christlow hit the biggest 6 of the season in his 28 n.o. and although always in control Driffield came a lot closer to our score than we thought when they were 68/8 eventually scoring 105/9 and Alex Colman taking his first wicket of the season was crucial.
A return game against a Scarborough, desperate to play on a wet and windy night, at Sewerby. A victory for them would win the league and despite the conditions the game was completed and they duly won by knocking off our 77/9 in17 overs.
The last match was the Division A Cup Final against Driffield and Captain Rob Atkin bowled like a man possessed to reduce his school mates to 22/3. Driffield then responded with three retirements and posted a highly competitive score of 119/3.
It was at this late stage in the season that our top order all produced what they were capable of and Sam Wragg & James Faulkner both recorded retirements supported by other double figure scores to pass the Driffield total with 10 balls to spare.
Rob deservedly won the Man of the match award.
An excellent end to the season.
All the A team will now progress to Senior cricket and as in the past hopefully provide the senior sides with some valuable players.

Thanks once again to Val for doing most of the scoring and Chris and Paul for standing in when I was indisposed.

Sewerby Juniors U15 B team 2009 - Ken Rennoldson

20 over cricket was a new experience to many of the players in this team and it was unfortunate that the very first fixture was against Seamer who were probably the oldest set of lads in Div 3 and were to end up Div 3 Champions. The bowling was excellent and we restricted them to 94/7. Sadly our first batting performance did not match the bowling and only Jay Mitchinson-Singh managed a double figure score in a total of 34.
A similar result followed against Flixton in the Divisional Cup and the next league match against Pickering.
Whilst results were poor the team were quickly learning the hard realities of 20 over cricket and individual performances were starting to improve.   Bridlington B was the next opponent and although beaten the scorelines were much closer at 103 against Sewerby’s 80 but still no points in the bag.
Scalby B became our first victory and both Lawrence Pearson and Luke Dixon became the first retirements in a score of 93/4 and the opposition were bowled out for 72 and a much better performance albeit a defeat came in the return match against Pickering B.
At this juncture we held an Inter Club match with a mixture of ‘A’ Team v ‘B’ Team and again this proved to help those new to competitive cricket as the main scorers in the match were ‘A’ teamers but all the wickets taken were bowlers from the ‘B’ team. A really tight match ended with a last ball win.
Back to league business and reverses against Scarborough B and Hunmanby both of which fielded more experienced players.
The season then changed for the team and started with a  cracking win against Scalby A team with Jason Faulkner and Jack Cowton starring with the bat and Harry Burton and Jack with the ball.
Our early season beating by Flixton in the cup was a distant memory as the scores in the next league match were Flixton 118/7 and Sewerby B 111/4.      Not so easy this time huh!!
Lawrence Pearson and Jack Cowton were now coming into their own and scoring maximums whilst our bowling attack aligned to some good fielding was not conceding runs easily and two comfortable wins against Staxton and Bridlington B saw the confidence flood through the team…….
…only to be followed by our worst defeat of the season at the hands of champions Seamer.
A close match against Scalby A was followed by a strong win against a young Wykeham team when Matthew Keyworth recorded his first retirement.
After a good hiding in the cup, then a very close defeat, we met Flixton for the third time and this was the measure of improvement in the season when we comprehensively beat them and went on to gain 3 points against Scalby B.
Chris Briggs started  the season  wondering where the first points would come from and with his guidance the team ended  in 5th position out of the eleven teams which was a more than creditable performance and hopefully he can take them forward to challenge for honours in the A Division next season.

Thanks to Chris for running the team and to Val when available to score and also to those parents who also put pen to paper when required.

Sewerby Under 9’s & 11’s 2009 Report - Terry Reeves

The Under 9’s & 11’s this season were run together at practice with me and Robert Traves and occasional support when requested from John Braimbridge to who I am most grateful.

I am convinced the Under 9’s are the keystone for building a successful Junior section and so on to Senior sides. Running the Under 9 & 11 sides together at practice means we can move juniors up or down as the individuals skills and safety dictate.

We have some very interesting youngsters coming along at both levels. In addition Luke Dixon and Connor Bingham have been playing for Scarborough District Level. Three more are going for trials in November. Rebecca Keyworth was spotted by East Yorkshire under 9’s and has been playing for them around the country; she is expected to join the Under 11’s this coming season.

The number of newcomers attending this early year was low; however after some sterling work by Andrew Rennoldson and Robert Traves we have a useful group of newcomers. The playing skills of the original group have improved dramatically, especially during August when match experience started to pay dividends.

I am most grateful for the support of Parents who made running matches so much easier. To Pete Jefferson for the interesting pitches! Thanks to the ever reliable John Brumpton for the booking and preparation of home matches, Alan Stead for the fixtures.

We are sending up to Ken and Chris another group of capable youngsters whom we shall miss, they are like family! See you all on presentation evening.
